María's last doctor visit (see photos in previous blog entry)

We're finished!  María had her last doctor's visit today and, though she is a bit shy of her 8 cm goal (she has gained 7.3 cm, which is excellent), Dr. Paley has judged it better to stop lengthening today, as planned.
Maria now enters into the consolidation stage, when the new bone will solidify. This should take about 16 weeks, after which Maria will return to Dr. Paley to have the fixator removed and a rod placed in her femur, which will be removed in a year's time.
The good news is that when Maria returns for her next lengthening, it might be in only two years, and

she might be able to use an internal lengthening system, called "Precice" which doesn't have an external fixator and requires an easier physical therapy and is much less painful.  Wouldn't that be nice??!!!

As you can imagine, Maria, who has been stoicly doing three tough physical therapy sessions a day, is delighted!!! She has done a great job!

Última consulta

Hoy hemos acudido a nuestra última consulta en el Paley Institute. A fecha de hoy hemos alcanzado 7.3 cm de alargamiento, un poco por debajo de nuestro objetivo de 8 cm. No obstante, Dr. Paley nos ha dicho que prefiere no seguir alargando, ya que esto podría dar lugar a diversas complicaciones no deseables. Así que nos ha cambiado los tornillos del fijador y a partir de ahora estamos oficialmente en la fase de consolidación, que en principio debería durar el mismo tiempo que el del alargamiento, unas 16 semanas. Estamos muy contentos de habernos acercado tanto a nuestro objetivo, y María está encantada de parar ya que la fisioterapia últimamente estaba siendo muy dura. Buen trabajo, Maria!

En cuanto a los próximos pasos, tendremos que venir en 3/4 meses para quitar el fijador e insertarle una vara que a su vez tendremos que quitar un año después. Y la buena noticia es que el próximo alargamiento podría ser dentro de 2 años y que podría ser con el sistema PRECISE, que es un método de alargamiento interno que no requiere el uso del fijador externo y que además supone una fisioterapia mucho más fácil y menos dolorosa. Estamos muy ilusionados con esta perspectiva.

Another week gone by...

We have been súper busy this week.  The girls all participated in the Boosterthon held at their school, Timber Trace Elementary.  The event consisted in each child running around a course on the school field, with money pledged by friends and family to be donated for each lap the child ran, the monies being used for school projectsl

Angel, Diana and I turned out at 8:15 to watch Paula run 35 laps!!!!! It was hot and sweaty but she braved the sun and had a great time with her classmates.

We returned for the fourth grade class run, to see both Patty and Maria.  Luckily, it had clouded over a bit, but it still was about 32 degrees!  

Maria, instead of running, was given a special seat on a golf cart and took a lap around the golf course. 

Patty valiantly ran 35 laps, while Maria participated by spraying a water bottle on the runners as they ran past her! But a good time was had by all!

The girls have also gotten together with Paley Institute friends at activities in the hospital. Here's a picture of the girls with Max and Daniel at Nova Night, where they had a pizza party after a group discussion.

On Sat. we had a visit from the girls' cousin, Roberto, who is living close by in Boca Raton.  He is as handsome and affectionate as ever! He accompanied the girls in a trip to Loggerhead Marine Center to see the turtles!

On Sunday we had a visit from Angelina, a lovely friend from Maria's class.  The girls spent the afternoon making jewelry.  Our stay here has been so great because of the special friends we've made!

And for those of you who have been anxiously awaiting, here is a picture of Patty's robot which was due last week.  Pretty creative, huh?! Very Patty...!

Nuestra vida en Palm Beach

Hola a todos. Como no tenemos novedades médicas (hasta el día 22 no tenemos cita con Paley) he pensado que estaría bien publicar algunas imágenes de nuestro día a día aquí en Florida. A pesar de ser ya septiembre, hace un calor infernal, lo que no nos deja disfrutar mucho de los preciosos parques y lagos que nos rodean. Aquí podéis ver a las pequeñas de la familia en el parque de PGA (Professional Golfers' Association). 

Las niñas se lo pasan en grande en el colegio que se llama Timber Trace Elemantary, donde no paran de hacer proyectos, leer libros, escribir ensayos y hacer experimentos científicos. Las profesoras son encantadoras y nos han prometido que vamos a mantener el contacto a la vuelta a España. Aquí os ponemos una foto del exterior del cole y una imagen del autobús amarillo típico de los colegios en América. 

Por la tardes Maria va a hacer fisioterapia en el Paley Institute donde tiene que trabajar duro para mantener la movilidad de la rodilla. Allí nuestras físioterapeutas Fran, Tatiana y Vanessa se han portado genial con María y nos dejan llevar a las hermanas para acompañarla. 

También hemos hecho unos amigos australianos, la familia Rigby, cuyo hijo Daniel también es paciente de Paley. Su hermano Max se quedó con nosotros el día que le operaron a Daniel para quitarle su fijador externo. 

Os preguntaréis qué hacemos los mayores mientras las niñas están en el colegio. Bueno, además de haber renovado el vestuario entero de doña Elvira, de vez en cuando hacemos alguna excursión turística, como visitar los jardines japoneses de Morikami, y por supuesto, ir a la playa. 

Bueno, espero que os hayáis hecho una idea de cómo vivimos aquí en Palm Beach. Os echamos mucho de menos a todos y ya tenemos muchas ganas de volver. Abrazos a todos de Angel, Elvira, María, Patty, Paula, Belén y Diana. 

An unexpected visit!

Last night we received a surprise visit from our friend Neely, who had returned to Florida for her doctor's appointment with Dr. Paley.  She was having her treatment here this summer along with Maria and we had fun times with her and her mother Beth.  Now that she has returned to her home in Kentucky, we have missed her!  She is looking great, and her leg almost reaches the ground!!  Hooray!

Another week down!

We have had another good week and less than three more to go home!  We are getting excited, doing lots of shopping (the bargains here are ridiculous!) and trying to figure out how on earth we will get it all packed in our bags!

Yesterday morning was spent at the library.  The girls are all reading up a storm, with much emphasis coming from their school being given to reading and enjoying it!  Paula, who just started first grade is reading second grade books in English already!  And the twins are right on level with their fourth grade classmates.  To say nothing about Belen who is the queen of board books... I am one happy Grandma!

As it was raining, we stayed indoors and did some excercise on the wii we have in the house.  It is great for Maria especially, to keep her knee bending.  Take a look at her

Then, the mailman arrived with Belen's new American passport!  A red letter day for her!

We had a special guest for dinner too.  Fran Guardo, the director of Physical Therapy at the Paley Institute was kind enough to join us and we had a lovely time.  Fran's son is living in Bilbao ( what a small world!!!) and she is planning on visiting him in Oct. So we will be seeing her soon over there!

3 semanas y a casa! / 3 more weeks to go

Hoy hemos vuelto a tener consulta, esta vez con uno de los asistentes de Paley, John Robbs. De nuevo hemos tenido buenas noticias: 6.5 cm alargados, con buena formación de hueso y con un rango de movimiento excelente para lo que llevamos alargado ya (90 grades de flexión y 0 de extension). Nos ha confirmado que en 3 semanas terminaremos de alargar y que podemos marcharnos a España inmediatamente después. Así que el viernes 26 de septiembre volamos a Madrid!! Estamos que no nos lo creemos todavía. Os adjunto la última radiografía en la que podéis ver como se va alargando el fémur. Gracias de nuevo a todos los seguidores de Marichi por vuestras oraciones y los ánimos que nos habéis dado, habéis sido una pieza fundamental en este proceso. 

Today we had another appointment at the Clinic, this time with one of Paley's PA's, John Robb. Once again we have had very good news: we have lengthened 6.5 cm, with good bone growth and an excellent range of motion taking into consideration the amount we have already lengthened (90 degrees flextion and 0 degrees extension). John has confirmed that we will have finished lengthening in 3 weeks, and that we can go back to Spain immediately afterwards. So on Friday September 26 we will be flying back to Madrid! We still can't believe it! I have included the latest x-rays so that you can see how much Maria's femur has grown. Thanks to all of you Marichi followers for your prayers and the support you have given us, you have all been an important part of this process.

Hola a todos somos Pati, María y Paula hoy hemos hecho galletas y las hemos decorado y nos han quedado genial. Y hoy no hemos tenido cole y por eso hemos hecho galletas. Y cuando la galletas estaban terminadas y Belén las ha visto y se las ha zampado porque estaba muy hambrienta.  Bueno metiendose en el tema nos lo hemos pasado genial cocinando, hemos hecho un montón 

Vamos a hacer una encuesta, elegir la que más os guste y escríbidlo en el blog.

I, Robot

The 4th graders at Timber Trace Elementary were assigned the creation of a robot, using recycled items.  Maria's is due on Fri., (Patty's not until Sept. 19), so, with Grandpa's help and Patty's input, she

spent Sat. Assembling a most amazing product!  Here she is proudly displaying it

Today is Labor Day, so we most certainly are laboring, as there is no school today, and it is already 31 degrees outside!

I am sure we will have fun!

BROCHETAS

Hola a todos soy Pati hoy he hecho brochetas de frutas para el postre y estaba muy rico, lo he tomado con un poco de helado.Si queréis la receta ahora os la digo necesitais: melocoton,manzana, cereals, fresas, sandia y un mini baby bel si quereis.  Contar todo y poner en un palito para brochetas.  Que aproveche, yeaaah!

Diana toma el relevo

Hola a todos,

Hoy se ha marchado Icho a España después de 3 meses aquí. Un nuevo Rey, la derrota de la Roja, la caída en desgracia de los Puyol... Han pasado tantas cosas durante este tiempo que esperemos que reconozca su país natal cuando llegue. Aunque seguro que va a echar de menos los bagles, los beef franks, la simpatía de los floridianos....y por supuesto nosotros le vamos a echar mucho de menos a él. Nos quedamos aquí mis padres y yo con las 4 niñas para la recta final, 5 semanas de duro trabajo de fisio para alargar los 2.5 cm que nos quedan. Lo bueno es que María está muy motivada y concienciada así que vamos a por todas. 

Este fin de semana hemos celebrado mi 39 cumpleaños y hemos visitado el Museo Flagler, la casa de Palm Beach que se contruyó el magnate americano del siglo pasado Henry Flagler. En dos palabras: Im-presionante (ver foto en el post de mi madre). Os incluyo una foto de las visitas desde la casa sobre Lake Worth, por donde pasan los yates más espectaculares del mundo. 

Muchas gracias a todos por las felicitaciones, sobre todo a mis amigas de Getxo (las petardas) que me han enviado un regalo precioso. Os mandamos un abrazo desde aquí y nos vemos ya pronto! 

Happy birthday Diana

It was a busy, happy week, with the girls really enjoying and getting into school.  Patty and María both have an assignment to make a robot, which Grandpa has embraced as his own !  And all three girls have a reading log, which has them enthusiastically reading every day, making for one happy Grandma!

Sat. was Diana's 39th birthday, which the whole family celebrated together.  Diana invited us all to visit the Henry Flagler Museum in West Palm Beach, which is a gorgeous Gilded Age mansion a la Great Gatsby. Flagler was the millionaire partner of Rockefeller of Standard Oil and the promotor of Florida as a vacation resort area.  His mark is all over Palm Beach and he is revered as the founder of American resorts.  

His house was fantastic, and even the girls were fascinated by the history it told.  A good time was had by all.

Alas, this morning Icho had to go home to Madrid.  The girls already miss him dreadfully, remarking at dinner time that the table seemed empty without him. I too, his partner in blogging, will miss his teasing me when his blog posts rack up more than mine...!

Apeeeti, Apeeeeti, Apeeeeetico de Madrid

Y una cosa más que no ha contado mi suegra, cuando le dieron a Belén la bandera americana se puso a cantar 'Apeeeti, Apeeeti, Apeeeetico de Madrid' viendo que eran los mismos colores. Espero que su abuelo Rafa esté orgulloso de los valores educativos de su nieta más pequeña.

One more American!

Yesterday Belen received her certificate of naturalization and became a US citizen!  The whole family went to Homeland Security to accompany her for the event.  True to her fashion, Belen was very nonchalant about the procedure but did enjoy waving her new American flag. She has also learned to do the Pledge of Allegiance at daycare, so I guess she is about as American as can be!!!

5.5 cm.

Yesterday Maria had an appt. with Dr. Paley and her femur now has grow 5.5 cm!  Very good news. However he has warned us that her progress now might slow down, as all the surrounding muscles and tissues are being stretched to the max.  But we are ready for whatever, after had such good progress until now.  Keep your fingers crossed!

The girls came back from school absolutely delighted!  Lunchtime, where they could choose from a menu of American delights such as chicken tenders, sliders, etc.  was a huge success.  Their ride home on the school bus was also an adventure, as when they got off at their bus stop, we weren't there to greet them (they were a bit earlier than we had thought!) they came walking home by themselves!  You can imagine our faces when they burst through the front door!!!!

I guess they are growing up...

5.5 cm

Hola familia,

Llegamos ahora mismo de ver al Dr. Paley que nos ha confirmado las buenas noticias, 55 mm de hueso nuevo. Hemos rebasado el umbral de 5 cm que es el mínimo exigible, a partir de aquí todo lo que ganemos está fenomenal. Hay que ir viendo día a día cómo va la movilidad de la rodilla y ver si puede seguir flexionando a 90º como hasta ahora ha venido haciendo. Está muy contento con que María no haya perdido movilidad en la rodilla en todo el proceso y por eso no hay que forzar la máquina y teniendo siempre en cuenta que a partir de ahora cada caso es una historia diferente. Hay casos que llegan a 8 cm, casos que no, y casos que incluso lo superan. Iremos paso a paso. Mirad el pedazo de hueso que va teniendo.

Como os comentamos esta mañana, las 3 mayores han empezado el cole y han vuelto encantadas. Han terminado antes de tiempo, el autobús les ha dejado en la parada antes de lo esperado y han vuelto andando ellas solas. No es mucha distancia, 100 metros o así, pero nos ha hecho mucha gracia cuando han entrado en casa las 3 solas, cada vez más autónomas.

Mañana es la jura de bandera de Belén, eso no nos lo podemos perder, creo que la CNN se ha acreditado ya para la cobertura del evento

Summer is (officially!) over!

This week was the girls' last hurrah, as there was no camp and school hadn't started.  They had lots of fun going to a cultural activity at the Norton Museum of Art, had a visit from their Spanish cousin, Roberto, who is residing close by in Boca Raton, and on Friday, their Open House at Timber Trace Elementary School where they met their new teachers and classmates. ( See Icho's pics)

This weekend, Angel and I had our last hurrah and spent the two days on the shores of Singer Island, toasting ourselves in the sun.  We let Diana and Icho have some quality time with the kids!

Today the big girls set off for school, more or less happily...Paula wasn't too keen, but will surely come home fine!

On Friday Diana and I had our interview with Homeland Security and Belen has been granted citizenship, through what is known as the Grandparents Clause. (Take note, Terry!). On Tues. We return for her Naturalization Ceremony!!!

Una semana más (o menos)

Hola familia,

Lleváis tiempo sin saber mucho de nosotros pero seguís en nuestras mentes y corazones, no lo dudéis en ningún momento. El final de la semana ha sido muy movido y completo; despedimos a 'uncle Tommy' que se marchó y nos dejó un vacío de energía y humor difícil de llenar. Las niñas estuvieron locas con él, es un tío divertidísimo y muy implicado con los más pequeños. Os dejamos una foto de las niñas en un centro de rehabilitación de animales que hay en la zona que todos los años recibe y atiende a miles y miles de animales salvajes heridos o enfermos, desde serpientes cascabel hasta osos, panteras y águilas.

El jueves por la tarde lo pasamos también estupendamente en el Norton Museum of Art, en el que había una exposición temporal sobre los orígenes de la empresa Mattel con una colección de Barbies desde la primera hasta la última, más de 50 años de moda y alta costura aplicada a las mundialmente conocidas muñecas. Había una zona en la que los niños podían disfrazarse y había una réplica de una pasarela en la que nuestras niñas evidentemente quisieron dejar su huella. Os dejamos también la foto del nuevo modelo de Barbie 'Marichi in Miami' que sacarán la próxima temporada. Para los mayores, se trata de una colección de arte privada muy importante, con salas dedicadas a pintura europea (Rubens, Cranach, Van Dyck...) y contemporánea (Miró, Picasso, Pollock, Hopper...). Había una actividad en la que los niños debían buscar unos objetos y animales dentro de los cuadros y estuvimos entretenidos un buen rato.

El fin de semana lo rematamos con la visita de nuestro querido primo Roberto, hijo de mi hermano Kike, que está en la universidad cerca de aquí, en Boca Raton. Fue un día intenso con piscina por la mañana, lunch y película por la tarde y salida a cenar en un mexicano elegido por Paulita. Gracias Roberto por la visita y te esperamos más veces, para todos es una alegría enorme este tipo de acontecimientos.

Para finalizar y no menos importante, comentaros que estamos ya en la segunda fase del proceso de alargamiento, mañana lunes tenemos revisión con los médicos y esperemos que el hueso haya crecido ya más de 5 cm. Nos quedarían menos de 3 para el objetivo, unas 5-6 semanas aproximadamente si va todo bien. María está físicamente muy bien, hemos superado un pequeño bache en el que cogió algo de miedo a la fisioterapia pero ahora está mucho más contenta y animada.

Y más cosas, mañana empezamos el cole (de 8 am a 2 pm) con las 3 mayores, cada una en una clase en el colegio público del barrio, Timber Trace Elementary School. Patricia y María en 4º y Paulita en 1º. El viernes conocimos a las profesoras y el colegio y van a estar fenomenal, están muy excitadas y contentas. Pasaremos la fisioterapia a las tardes y por las mañanas... ¡estaremos solos los 4 adultos por primera vez en casi 3 meses! No sé si sabremos disfrutar de tanta libertad...

Bueno, y el martes Belén jura la Constitución y besa la bandera de EEUU para conseguir el pasaporte como ciudadana americana, no me diréis que no se presenta una semana más que interesante. Mañana os contamos más cosas y por supuesto que el momento de Belén besando las barras y estrellas quedará grabado para la posteridad (¿¿están seguros de verdad estos americanos a quién están dando la nacionalidad?? ¿¿¿se lo han pensado bien???)

Chugging along

Another week has passed and it has been as busy as always.  

Paula and Patty finished their camp this week, and on a glorious note, as Patty was awarded the "Most Respectful" prize in her class!  At least we know she was polite!

On Friday we celebrated Paula's 6th birthday.  The whole family (minus the grandpas) did a tour of West Palm Beach on an amphibious bus/boat and had a grand time.  

María had to pose with a bunch of other Paley patients on bikes (even though most of them couldn't actually ride ride a bike!) for a promotional pamphlet.  She put on her best smile and looked like a star!

Uncle Tommy is visiting us for a few days and the girls are having a súper time with him.  Last night we all had ice cream - his treat!  Today a trip to a Nature centre is on the agenda.

For all my ASB friends, you will be interested in knowing that Angel and I met up with Jane for a lovely visit on Sat.  We rendezoused in Vero Beach and had lunch together.  It was a marathon talk fest, catching up with all our news.  Jane looked as gorgeous as ever as you can see from the pic below

El día de Paula

Hola familia,

El pasado 8 de agosto celebramos el 6º aniversario de nuestra querida Paulita. Lo pasamos en grande dando una vuelta por la costa de Palm Beach en un vehículo anfibio que nos recogió en el centro de la ciudad y que, para sorpresa de Paula, se sumergió en las aguas del Atlántico para convertirse en un barco. Paula y las niñas alucinaron. El camión (ya convertido en barco) nos enseñó las casas donde viven los famosos en Singer Island (llamada así por el sr. Singer, el de las máquinas de coser, que la compró a mediados del siglo pasado), la zona de mas pedigrí de Palm Beach. Vimos la casa de Celine Dion, de la nieta de Henry Ford... y del ¡doctor Paley!

Os dejamos unas fotos de recuerdo del momento, Paula soplando las velas de su 6º cumpleaños, posando junto a la policía local y por último el vehículo anfibio sumergiéndose en las procelosas aguas del océano.
